The munitions factory in Saint-Malo
In 1939, with war on the verge of being declared in Europe, the Department of National Defence was forced to rethink its military supply facilities. A plant in the Saint-Malo district was converted into a munitions factory and several foundries were built. Combined with a female workforce, these changes made Dominion Arsenal one of the most significant parts of the Canadian military-industrial system.
