In the first few decades of the 19th century, an entire community of workers settled in Bas-du-Sault. The strong water current powered the mill at the base of the Montmorency Falls. The sawmill quickly became one of the most prolific in North America, producing squared timber, planks and various parts for the shipbuilding industry.
