The history of Indigenous communities is closely linked to that of New France. Much of New France’s economy was based on the fur trade with the First Nations. Also, the colony’s military defence against the British relied on its alliances with several First Nations. That is why there is always an Indigenous presence at the Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France.
