Place Royale with military fanfare
In the days of New France, the Compagnies Franches de la Marine were France’s main military force, and they were able to defend by land and sea. In fact, their motto was Per mare et terras, Latin for “By Sea and By Land.” They took part in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
