A symbolic reconstruction of the arrival of the Filles du Roi (king’s daughters)
From the very start of colonization in New France, a problem quickly became apparent: there were far fewer women in the colony than men. Between 1663 and 1673, France sent many young women, mostly orphans or widows, to help develop the new territory. Marguerite Bourgeoys took many of them into her care.
