In the Middle Ages, jousting on horseback was a very popular activity, especially for the nobility. These confrontations first appeared in France in the 12th century, before they were suspended in the 16th century after the tragic death of King Henri II in 1559. This practice indeed caused many deaths and injuries, despite the protections that were added over the centuries.
