Michel Bergeron was named assistant coach of the Quebec Nordiques at the start of the 1980–1981 season. After a few games, General Manager Maurice Fillion handed him the head coaching position, which he held until 1987. Under Bergeron’s leadership, the Nordiques enjoyed their best years in the NHL, reaching the semi-finals on two occasions. His fiery temper earned him the nickname “Le Tigre” with French-speaking Quebecers.
