In 1663, Monseigneur François de Laval founded the Séminaire de Québec, the first institution of higher learning in New France. In 1852, the leaders of the Séminaire de Québec established a university in the city centre, named Université Laval, in honour of the founder of their seminary. In the 1960s, Université Laval underwent a phase of expansion and moved to the Cité-Universitaire district, built in the suburbs.
